Day 35 Monday 27th June 2016 107km (3185km in total) “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike.” – John F. Kennedy As I found out yesterday, the coast road was closed with maintenance on one of the tunnels. The receptionist said it was either a journey on a train or  climbing a small track up the side of the mountain over the tunnel. Not wanting to take the train, I opted for the rough track. It was extremely steep, I now understand why they have tunnels here! My bike nearly didn’t make it up there, with the wheels…

Day 34 Sunday 26th June 2016 55km (3078km in total) “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost I was woken up at 3.30am by some rustling in the nearby bushes. Sitting up bolt upright, I was soon very awake, being my first wild camping experience I was a anxious about predators or people coming. The footsteps draw nearer and nearer. A short grunt and snort gave me some relief. At least it wasn’t an angry farmer! The animal come right up against…

Day 33 Saturday 25th June 2016 99km (3023km in total) “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.” – Clifton Fadiman I think this is the first time I’ve ever thought “I wish it was cooler!” It definitely isn’t the perfect cycling conditions, with sunbathing probably the only activity which is enjoyable right now. I woke up at 5am today, meaning it was cool and loverly. I wish it would stay like this all day! [caption id=”” align=”alignnone” width=”1632″ caption=”Clouds please stay! Lovely view…

Day 32 Friday 24th June 2016 94km (3024km in total) “A wise traveler never despises his own country.” – Carlo Goldoni (I’ll try, but after certain recent events, it does make it difficult!)

"Morning has broken..."
6am my alarm went off today. I am trying to wake a bit earlier everyday in order to miss out cycling in the main heat of the day. I was going to try and leave at 6 but as the reception was only open at 7am in order to pay, I decieded not to make any drastic changes to my…

Day 31 Thursday 23rd June 2016 147km (2930km in total) Andrea had to go out to work during the night so I was left alone in his house. The Warmshowers hosts are always so generous and trusting. It does sometimes feel a little unreal when someone you’ve only just met let’s you sleep in their house alone! This is Warmshowers for you! Most hosts have been travelling as well and been hosted by others so know what it’s like.

Photo shoot by the pool!
Warmshowers allows you to get to know locals and the culture slightly…

Day 30 Wednesday 22nd 2016 112km (km in total) “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

Views in the sun
In the UK, ‘bedtime’ is often seen to be around 11pm, and most outdoor gigs and music events finish then. Last night, on one side of my tent I had music blearing out and on the other I had a busy main road! I was also very hot. After being in the sun during the day, I seem to radiate out heat during the night. Still, I was keen to get up at…

Day 29 Tuesday 21st June 2016 101km (2671km in total) “A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

I love this region!
I love the Dutch, they all seem to speak great english! The couple next to me (who were dutch) were very interested in my tour of Europe and gave lots of “respect”! ….They had been traveling in their caravan for a few weeks in Italy, and it was good to hear it wasn’t just Germany and Austria that were having the bad weather and rain….

Day 28 Monday 20th June 2016 126km (2570km in total) “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road (or dangerous drivers in my case!) and enjoy the journey.” – Babs Hoffman

The last time I'll see the alps for a while
Just 40km in from the border of Italy, and the weather is picking up already! Yesterday it was rainy and bearly short weather and today it is full sun and back to 26°c! Crossing through Germany and Austria for the last two weeks have mostly been cloudy and rain, so I had forgotten all about…

Day 27 19th Sunday June 2016 112km  (2444km in total) “The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.” Rudyard Kipling Even though I had the afternoon resting yesterday, my legs still seemed to be aching. This is the one of the first times my legs have been feeling properly heavy. Up to now, it’s always just been general tiredness, maybe all the miles are having their effect. Luckily today, even though I had planed a fairly long ride, was almost all downhill. The elevation profile looked great, a gentle slope, down all the way into Italy….

Day 26 18th Saturday June 2016 63km (2332km in total) “To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” Freya Stark Sleeping in the room above the reception was comfortable yet a little strange. My head was right next to some big fluffy animals watching over me. When I emerged, going down to wash, I bumped into the lady who was running the campsite and had done for the last 40 years. She had the look on her face as if to say “what are you doing in my loft?” The sun was…
