Day 39 Friday 1st July 2016 118km (3632km in total) “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson I love it when other foreign travellers think their the only people who speak their language. There were some British lads on tour, obviously just been so see the football in Nice. I heard one of them commenting as I walked past “I bet everyone’s laughing…

Day 38 Thursday 30th June 2016 108km (3514km in total) “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” – Susan Heller Some campsites have everything I need, others have little, but the price doesn’t always correspond! This campsite have everything I’m pleased to say! Free WiFi,  free showers and a place to charge up my electricals.  When you have to pay extra for those I sometimes begin to dislike the campsite! One difference between Italy and France compared to the rest of Europe I’ve traveled through…

Day 37 Wednesday 29th June 2016 123km (3406km in total) “The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.” – G.K. Chesterton For some odd reason, I can only seem to find vanilla black tea in Europe. I first tried it a few years ago on a cycling holiday in France. I love the taste of it, a nice change from normal black tea. Even though its made by Twinnings, of LONDON, I have never found it in the UK. Jean and Magali luckily had one teabag spare, so that and the traditional continental…

Day 36 Tuesday 28th June 2016 98km (3283km in total) “The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.” – John Howard My new cycling buddie and fellow traveller Hamadi and I had planed to leave early to avoid the heat of the open coast. However, after starting the day with an Italian espresso and waiting to pay for the campsite, it was well after 9am when we set off. Hamadi had told me he averaged 20-30km/h on his rides so I was expecting it to be a little faster than my usual speed. Up the first few climbs…

Day 35 Monday 27th June 2016 107km (3185km in total) “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike.” – John F. Kennedy As I found out yesterday, the coast road was closed with maintenance on one of the tunnels. The receptionist said it was either a journey on a train or  climbing a small track up the side of the mountain over the tunnel. Not wanting to take the train, I opted for the rough track. It was extremely steep, I now understand why they have tunnels here! My bike nearly didn’t make it up there, with the wheels…

Day 34 Sunday 26th June 2016 55km (3078km in total) “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost I was woken up at 3.30am by some rustling in the nearby bushes. Sitting up bolt upright, I was soon very awake, being my first wild camping experience I was a anxious about predators or people coming. The footsteps draw nearer and nearer. A short grunt and snort gave me some relief. At least it wasn’t an angry farmer! The animal come right up against…

Day 33 Saturday 25th June 2016 99km (3023km in total) “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.” – Clifton Fadiman I think this is the first time I’ve ever thought “I wish it was cooler!” It definitely isn’t the perfect cycling conditions, with sunbathing probably the only activity which is enjoyable right now. I woke up at 5am today, meaning it was cool and loverly. I wish it would stay like this all day! [caption id=”” align=”alignnone” width=”1632″ caption=”Clouds please stay! Lovely view…

Day 32 Friday 24th June 2016 94km (3024km in total) “A wise traveler never despises his own country.” – Carlo Goldoni (I’ll try, but after certain recent events, it does make it difficult!)

"Morning has broken..."
6am my alarm went off today. I am trying to wake a bit earlier everyday in order to miss out cycling in the main heat of the day. I was going to try and leave at 6 but as the reception was only open at 7am in order to pay, I decieded not to make any drastic changes to my…

Waterless Pits and Bits Body Wash and Shampoo Good hygiene is very important when travelling, especially by bike. It is something often not taken seriously. When cycle touring, with all the sweat, bacteria can build up causing infections or boils. If you are travelling for a long period, you don’t need that! When finding products to fill my panniers up and weigh down my bike, I came across Waterless Pits and Bits body wash and shampoo. They both don’t require any water so can be useful when out in the wild or away from showers. They are also very quick…
