Day 11 Friday 3rd June 2016 – Großenbrode to Lübeck 55 miles When thinking of this journey, I planned my arrival and finishing counties but not much in between! I could go the most direct route from Scandinavia to Spain, heading through Germany, Belgium, France then Spain. The other slightly longer and mountainous option would be the go further east, through Czech, Austria and Italy before France and finally Spain. It is difficult to decide between these both potentially beautiful routes. Now I’m in Germany it’s decision time!

The heat has started!
Being so torn,…

Day 10 Thursday 2nd June 2016 – Vordingborg to Großenbrode 65 miles Today was my last day in Scandinavia, an area I will greatly miss, especially Denmark. The countryside is stunning, the food is great and there are cycle paths everywhere. Denmark had the most long distance routes, going from city to city, all signed. The paths in Sweden were better maintained and smoother, but Denmark has planned great routes and paths. Everybody seems to speak near fluent English in Scandinavia.  If you ask them if they do, some will reply with “a little”, meaning they have a vocabulary bigger…

Day 9 Wednesday 1st June 2016 – Ishøj to Vordingborg 58 miles A night to forget! Restless sleeping and worrying about Jilly, the garmin. This is the first stress in the entire trip so far! Losing the garmin was a strange prospect as I was so used to following the plotted route. Some hardcore cycling tourers might say using a GPS to navigate is cheating while others can’t navigate without one. I’m halfway in the augment. Although I can happily tour with just a map and compass,  using a GPS means you have more time to enjoy the ride, countryside…

Day 8 Tuesday 31st May 2016 – Helsingor to Ishøj 54 miles May is a quiet but great time of year to go camping and travelling; the weather is normally just getting warmer but schools haven’t broken up so the season is only just getting going. Campsite’s are normally open but quiet and the same can be said about youth hostels. At all of the hostels I’ve stayed at so far, although I pay for a shared dorm, I always the only one in there.

Helsingor Danhostel
Helsingor was a vibrant town, with lots of tourists…

Day 7 Monday 30th May 2016 – Halmstad to Helsingor 63 miles I was woken up at 6am by the sun shining on my tent and an ant crawling up my face! I must have pitched up on a ants nest, as it they seemed to be everywhere. Luckily only a few were inside the actual tent, but outside, in my panniers, pots, water bottles….they had managed to get into most things! After a thougher shake of my belongings, I set off cycling through Halmstad. A flat city, busy with people cycling on their way to work. It was going…

Day 6 Sunday 29th May 2016- Asa to Halmstad 70 miles Waking up at 7am and the sun was shining right into my dorm, making shadows from the conifers outside. The sky was almost cloudless and with bearly a breeze in the air, I knew it was going to be a very warm day. Satisfied with my previous Warm Showers experience, I had contacted Anders from Halmstad to see if he had space for a fellow cyclist. Alas, this time less lucky as he was busy. I didn’t know this but Sweden celebrates Mother’s day on the last Sunday of…

Day 5 Saturday 28th May – Gothenburg to Asa 45 miles Marko was the best kind of host, giving me a hearty breakfast for the day ahead. Consisting of scrambled eggs, tea, cucumber, three types of cheese, rye bread and cracker bread, which is very popular in Sweden. Whilst eating, Marko told me a valuable fact about telling the time in Sweden! Apparently if someone tells you to meet them at half five, we in Britain and most other countries would think that as half a hour past five. However in Sweden, it means half a hour to five (4.30). Something…

Day 4 Friday 27th May 2016 – Uddevalle to Gothenburg 63 miles Warm Showers is a website specially designed for touring cyclists to enjoy a free nights stay or just to meet for a chat and share information, stories and experiences.  As I woke up inside my tent, feeling rather sunburnt from the day before, I remembered I’d downloaded an app for Warm Showers before I’d left. A quick look using the campsite’s poor WIFI and saw that there were dozens of fellow cyclists offering accomodation in Gothenburg, today’s destination. After reading through lots of different profiles, avoiding those with…

Day 3 Thursday 27th May 2016 47 miles The first night under the stars was very satisfactory, only waking up a couple of times due to the light. It seems to rarely get dark here, being light still around 10pm and the sun rising well before I get up, much earlier than I’m used to. As I was in the site’s toilets and hearing “It’s going to be a bright, bright sun-shiny day ” being blasted out of the radio, I decided long trousers were not the way today so quickly changed into shorts.  After breakfast, planning the route, looking…

Day 2 Wednesday 25 May 2016 60 miles After only arriving in Norway yesterday, it was time to leave. Being less than 20 miles from the border Swedish border it didn’t take long and after my first hill of the trip I was there around 11 am. It was only once I had reached this hill that I realised it had barely climbed any hills so far. Although this was good I was keen to test my legs. I tried to sprint up the first incline but the bike didn’t want to join me! It felt like somebody was pulling…
